Potala Palace represents the masterwork of ancient Tibetan architecture. It's built in Tang Dynasty when the king of Tibet, Songtsen Gampo married the Princess Wencheng. Princess Wencheng was the royal daughter of Tang Dynasty. Songtsen Gampo built this palace for her in 641. Almost 1000 years later, Qing Dynasty expanded the Potala Palace and then this palace became a religious and political center of Tibet. Both the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Amban (Governor) of Qing Dynasty lived here. Now Potale Palace is the holy land of Tibet Buddhism. It was listed into the National Key Cultural Relics Protection Units by China in 1961. In 1994, the UNESCO listed it as the World Culture Heritage. In 2013, it was selected as the National AAAAA Scenic Area by China Tourism Administration.
Foreign visitors need to get the entrance permit from Tibet Tourism Bureau before they buy train or flight ticket to Tibet. The ticket of Potala Palace need to be booked one day in advance. Due to the huge number of visitors, and the protection of the palace, the visit time is limited in one hour. But it's enough for the palace as the experienced travelers said. The square in front of Potala Palace is the highest city square on earth, don't miss it.
Some palaces like the temple around Chengde Mountain Resort, Sangzhutse Fortress and Jiangzi Castle are called the "Mini Potala" for the similar style.
Ticket Price: 200 Yuan. Opening Time: 09:00 - 12:00; 15:30 - 16:30. Thanks to our traveler editor Gal.
