Looking for that lost horizon

Lucky to have a chance to go to Shangrila during the last mid October. The flight ticket was cheap, 300 Yuan in my mind, and there were few visitors.

This book 'Lost Horizon' written by James Hilton in 1933 was a remarkable book in Shangri-la, Yunnan.

In the first day, it rained. I thought it would be better to go the Tiger Leaping Gorge.

When it came to 3:00 pm, the rain stopped. Then everything fell into a deep peace.

Later I arrived at the Baishuitai, an attraction between Lijiang and Shangrila.

I didn't find a bus station with daily bus to this place. This section of trip was guided by a local driver.

When it was 5:00 pm, I arrived at the Meli Snow Mountains. Of couse i didn't have enough time to visit it that night. I chose a hotel at the foot.

On the 5:00 am next day, i woke up, without my clock, with no one urging. That feeling was so beautiful.

Then i spent three days participating a hiking group in Yubeng.

The whole hiking route was about 5 km, well worth it when I saw the destination, the Yubeng Village.

The sky was very pure, clean. It was wonderful. And when i woke up, i could see the Meili Snow Mountains. How lucky!

I began to walk another route on the map. The hikers all woke up early. That was not very many.

It always impressed me that i could find some tiny, cute creatures in the forest.

This was the Ice Lake and the waterfalls.

I just walked forward and the snow mountains were closer. It was almost 4000 meters high.

There were several resting site along the road providing hot water.

I planned to go to Yading next day. It would be shared here too.

Any Comments? Wanna find someone to go with?

Path well-maintained and marked, although sometimes narrow, and at times impassable due to heavy rains

Where the high road descends to meet the lower road, one can climb down to the river near the Tiger Leaping Stone

is the tiger gorge near lijiang near tibet?

Reply RebeccaBarker:It's about 40 km North of LiJiang, in Yunnan province. It's maybe 200 km southeast of the Tibet border. We took a bus there from Lijiang and the ride was perhaps 90 minutes. The roads were narrow and twisty, but the scenery is breathtaking. Do not expect to visit Tibet on your own. Book well ahead with a reputable travel outfit. Good luck!

Hiking the length of the gorge is possible. The hiking path ("the high road") is well-maintained and marked, although sometimes narrow, and at times impassable due to heavy rains, and is used by the Naxi as part of everyday life. This trail is longer than the lower road, approximately 22 kilometres (14 mi), but is more varied.
